قرنفل Carnation/



Etymology of arabic words: the word قرنفل
(karanful) means the flower Carnation/Cloves and we discover  that it is a loan word from the Greek language. The ancient Greek word is καρυόφυλλο (kariofilo) while the mondern Greek γαρύφαλλο (gharifalo) which is a counter loan from Latin. The scientific name of this flower is Dianthus caryophyllus a name which derive from the third century B.C. Greek botanist Theophrastus who coined the name Dianthus, which means flower of Jupiter ( "άνθος του Διός"). In Turkish they use the word karanfil.
