بكتيريا bacteria

Etymology of arabic words: the word بكتيريا
(baktirian) means of course bacterium/ bacteria and has greek roots. The greek word βακτήριο (vaktirio) is a counter loan from the french language and is a diminutive of the ancient word βακτηρία (vaktiria) which means staff/cane (acc., to Liddell-Scott) . The explanation given by the greek etymological dictionary “Babiniotis” is that in the microscop the microorganisms, mainly the bacilli, seemed to be like small sticks. In Turkish they use the word bakteri.
