Etymology of
arabic words: the word بارود
(berud)
means Gunpowder and seems to be a loan word from the Greek
language. The Greek word πυρίτιδα/πυρίτις
(piritida/piritis) means nowadays the same but initially had the
meaning of a mineral which strikes fire and this is evident as the
ancient expression was “πυρίτιος λίθος” (piritios
lithos) and meant “ stone which gives fire”. In Turkish they use
the word barut.
