ONLINE ETYMOLOGY DICTIONARY:
herpes (n.)
late 14c., "inflammatory, spreading skin condition" (used of shingles, gangrene, etc.), from L. herpes "a spreading skin eruption," from Gk. herpes/έρπης,      the name for the disease shingles, lit. "creeping," from herpein/έρπω-ερπειν(ερπετό)  "to creep" (cognate with L. serpere "to creep;" see serpent). The condition was not distinguished into specific diseases until early 19c.

P.S. In civil engineering we use the technical term   ερπυσμος/creep of  the concrete.
