=(kiraz
or karaz) which means cherry is probably a loan word from the Greek
language. The greek word κεράσι /κέρασος (kerasi)
comes from the antiquity. The Romans the first century B.C. named
Kerasous (today turkish Giresun) a town in northern Minor Asia (
today Turkey) because they found there cherries and started
cultivating them in Rome.
