البرج tower

Etymology of arabic words: Maha in a video indicating the Leaning Tower of Pisa , said ,look the البرج
=(bourz) . There are two opinions for the etymology. First that the ancient greek word πύργος (pirgos) is the root of the arabic word and second that the Latin burgus or the arian (germanic) word burg is the right answer. In Turkish they use burç and burgaz.

  1. This word does not come from Latin. This word has been used in Arabic for at least 1500 years. It's in the Quran and in pre-Islamic poetry. The aforementioned Latin term of concern does not relate as strongly and if anything, it comes from Arabic.

I encourage you to study the vast semantic fields that come with deeper study of the Semitic tounges, in particular, that of Arabic, which has been preserved.

    Keep up the effort!

    1. Thank you very much for your comments. As I have mentioned elsewhere following Alexander the Great conquests there were for centuries commercial and cultural relations between Greeks and Arabs. Arabs offered as you know valuable services to the humanity by translating the scientific and philosophical works into Arabic. It is therefore natural to take some words from Greek.

  2. For your easy reference I copy herewith the sources I used for the etymology of the aforementioned word:

~ Ar burc برج 1. kule, hisar, 2. zodyak üzerindeki 12 yıldız kümesinin her biri ~ Aram burgā ברגא 1. kule, 2. yolcular için durak yeri, menzil ~ EYun pýrgos πύργος kule << HAvr *bhrgh- yüksek yer, kule < HAvr *bhergh- korumak

    ▼ EYun pýrgos: burç, burgaz
    ▼ Ger *burgs: burjuva
    from the Turkish etymological dictionary

See also the Arabic etymological Dictionary AED

The Ancient(8th century B.C.) Greek word Πύργος- Pirgos was taken and changed in Latin as Birgos-Burgus-bourg.

  4. Etymology
From Classical Syriac ܒܘܪܓܐ (burgāʾ), from Ancient Greek πύργος (purgos) which may be an ancient borrowing from Proto-Germanic *burgz, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerǵʰ- (“fortified elevation”), then the English words borough and burg, German Burg and Berg, Dutch burg and others.
Ancient Greek πύργος (purgos) is first attested in Homer's Iliad 7.206. Believed to be a borrowed word, probably from Urartian  (burgana, “palace, fortress”); compare also Old Armenian բուրգն (burgn, “pyramid”). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerǵʰ- (“high”), with cognates including Sanskrit बृहत् (bṛhát, “lofty, high, tall”), Old Armenian բարձր (barjr, “high”) and Old English burg (English borough). Kretschmer suggested a borrowing fromProto-Germanic *burg- (“fortified town, hill-fort”) mediated through some Northern Balkan language (Macedonian?). However, according to Beekes the abundance of Pre-Greek placenames (e.g. Πέργαμον (Pergamon) ) seems to indicate a Pre-Greek origin.
    Noun
برج (burj) (dual برجان (burjān), plural بروج (burūj) or ابراج (’abrāj))
