herpes
(n.)
- late 14c., "inflammatory, spreading skin condition" (used
of shingles, gangrene, etc.), from L. herpes "a spreading skin
eruption," from Gk. herpes/έρπης, the name for the disease shingles,
lit. "creeping," from herpein/έρπω-ερπειν(ερπετό) "to creep"
(cognate with L. serpere "to creep;" see serpent).
The condition was not distinguished into specific diseases until
early 19c.
P.S. In civil engineering we use the technical term ερπυσμος/creep of the concrete.
