GREEK ASTRONOMERS

ΑΡΑΤΟΣ-ARATOS 305-240 Π.Χ./B.C.

On either side the Axis ends in two Poles, but thereof the one is not seen, whereas the other faces us in the north high above the ocean. Encompassing it two Bears [Ursa Major and Minor] wheel together – wherefore they are also called the Wains.

Καί μιν πειραίνουσι δύω πόλοι ἀμφοτέρωθεν·

ἀλλ' ὁ μὲν οὐκ ἐπίοπτος, ὁ δ' ἀντίος ἐκ βορέαο
ὑψόθεν ὠκεανοῖο. Δύω δέ μιν ἀμφὶς ἔχουσαι
Ἄρκτοι ἅμα τροχόωσι· τὸ δὴ καλέονται Ἅμαξαι.

 Δηλαδή οι Αρχαιοι Ελληνες ειχαν σαφη εικονα της σφαιρικης μορφης της Γης και της περιστροφης της γυρω απο τον αξονα της. Επι πλεον γνωριζαν το σημειο προβολης του αξονα στον ουρανιο θολο. Ακομη διαπιστωνω οτι εβλεπαν φαινεται καθαρα την Μικρη Αρκτο ,ενω στις μερες μας μολις και μετα βιας ενα εμπειρο ματι μπορει να δει τον Πολικο Αστερα.



 This means that  the ancient Greeks had a clear picture of the spherical shape of the Earth and its rotation around its axis. In addition they  knew the point where this axis find   the celestial vault.  Further I understand  that  they saw clearly  the Little Dipper, while nowadays barely a trained eye can see only the  North Star.
